Kudumbashree continues making notable interventions during lock down Updated On 2020-04-12

The District Missions of Kudumbashree had been making notable interventions during the lock down in Kerala,  among the public in their respective districts to ensure the welfare of the people. During this week also, the district missions have brought up their  innovative initiatives.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the residents in the city can avail the service of Kudumbashree unit to get vegetables  delivered at their door steps. The service of 'vegetables at your door step vehicle' is available in residents associations in the city premises in the  first stage.The unit will deliver the vegetables to the door steps according to the order. Kudumbashree NHGs in Kollam had set a model by contributing vegetables and tubers worth Rs 1.5 lakhs to community kitchens in the district. They had contributed 1210 Kg vegetables worth Rs 48,400 and 3315 Kg tubers worth Rs 99,450. In total they had contributed a total of 4525 Kg vegetables to the community kitchens so far.  The vegetables and tubers are given under the leadership of the various CDSs in the district. The vegetables were used in around 52 community kitchens functioning in the district. Kudumbashree Pathanamthitta Mission has become a beacon of hope for the 192 Scheduled Tribe families in Perunad and Vadasserikkada panchayats in Ranni during lock down days. As part of laying emphasis on tribal areas in Kerala, Kudumbashree disbursed food kits to these families. Families comprising adults and kids were given away essential commodities. The second phase of distribution is set to roll out soon. In Alappuzha, the scheduled tribes families of Alappuzha District, through the Lock Down period, have been making TikTok videos, doing skit, conducting quiz and music competitions to make the days lively. Kudumbashree is providing immense support for these initiatives.


Kottayam District Mission gave special care for the elderly as well as the Destitute Free Kerala (DFK) beneficiaries in tribal hamlets during the lock down period. Kudumbashree is running community kitchens in 3 tribal hamlets in convergence with respective local self governments. From each of these three community kitchens, food is being delivered directly to elderly as well as to the houses of DFK beneficiaries. District mission has started this activity on March 30. In Idukki district, 11 girls and 4 boys from Vattavada  have not put their studies in the backburner amid Covid 19 scare. The deadly virus outbreak occured when they were seriously taking free coaching to appear for PSC examinations. Coaching was provided with Kudumbashree assistance. Nation-wide lockdown announcement came soon and the coaching centre had to remain shut. However, Kudumbashree extended support through troubled times as well. Together in different places, they are now preparing to crack the exams via WhatsApp groups to secure a place in the LDC ranklist next time. The students under the Kudumbashree Knowledge Centre functioning in Vattavada are taking lessons this way. Keen on maintaining social distancing during lockdown days, the aspirants are sitting in their homes and taking lessons. With music, poetry and photography, Kudumbashree women  from Ernakulam were making the best out of their talents on lockdown days. The Ernakulam District Mission was spearheading this initiative. Under the aegis of the District Mission, 'Cyber Arangus' are formed to beat lock down blues of women staying inside homes. Keeping the need to maintain social distancing in mind, creative games were conducted through Whats App. In Thrissur district, to make the supply of the free grocery kits announced by the Government of Kerala 'eco friendly', a group of NHGs from Thrissur District of Kerala set a model by making paper covers for Supplyco. It is the NHG members from Edathiruthi Panchayath of Thrissur who made paper covers out of newspapers for Supplyco. Neighbourhood Groups from the 18 wards of Edathiruthi Panchayath made more than 50,000 paper covers for Supplyco within three days time.

In Palakkad, the district administration of Palakkad launched a website and mobile app to ensure the public is getting the essential services. The covid support desk and mobile app was launched by the Palakkad district administration, associating with the NSS (National Services Scheme) wing of Government Polytechnic College, Palakkad. It is envisaged to provide the essential services through the mobile app. Kudumbashree Palakkad District Mission is the important service provider in this initiative. Kudumbashree Malappurm District Mission set a model by buying and delivering essential goods to the elderly people staying alone in the district. They buy and deliver provisions and vegetables as per the request of the elderly people who are staying alone in their houses.  The goods are delivered by the staff who work at Kudumbashree Malappuram District Mission office and have vehicle pass. Kudumbashree Wayanad District Mission did notable Covid-19 countering activities among the tribes in the district joining hands with the tribal department. District mission started the activities as soon as the state started countering corona virus spread. Giving awarness about covid 19, supply of hompeo prevention pills and food grains, availing food through community kitchen are some of the activities carry out by district mission among tribes.

Kannur District Mission brought grocery enough for 1400 families living in Aralam Farm in Kannur to their doorsteps. The District Mission and Scheduled Tribes Development Department jointly organised those activities. The same was done towards helping the Scheduled Tribe members stranded in the area without enough supply during lockdown days. Each family was given 30 kilograms of rice and 15 kgs of wheat. Hundreds of residents in the Colony were the worst hit as they ran out of essential commodities during lock down days. In Kasaragod District, Kuttikol Panchayath CDS served the special food they like to the guest labourers working in the district. They are serving the food that they like to 191 guest laborers who come to work in Kuttikol Panchayath. They are arranging chappathi, porotta and curry for the guest laborers. Kudumbashree system is trying its best for the people to make their lives better during the lock-down days.

COVID-19 state level countering activities by Kudumbashree - 2 Updated On 2020-04-12

Even before lock down was notified in the state, special meetings of Kudumbashree neighbourhood groups (NHGs) were organised and the significance of the 'Break the Chain' campaign was discussed and the importance for the elderly people to stay alert was also talked about among them. The ration supply had already been started. The supply of the food-grain kit have been started recently. It is the NHG members from Edathiruthi Panchayath of Thrissur who made paper covers out of newspapers for Supplyco.
