Since the Great Flood of 1924, the worst flood disaster in Kerala happened in 2018. The catastrophic floods that hit Kerala in July-August caused seere problems in almost all districts. Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in many parts of the state, with floods and landslides in the hilly areas. The water level in the dams has risen sharply. As a result, the shutters of the dams had to be left open. With this, the floods became extreme. Of the 54 dams in Kerala, 35 had to be opened. This is the first time in history that such a step has been taken. The shutters of the Cheruthoni Dam were opened together after a gap of 26 years. Wayanad district was completely isolated. Roads, rail and air transport networks were adversely affected as rivers overflowed.
