Jalakam 2018- An Exposure visit of CDS Chairpersons to Partner States of Kudumbashree NRO

Kudumbashree NRO has been able to build strong institutions of the poor, improve on the capability of the community institutions on accessing entitlements, orient the Panchayats towards better service delivery by working with the CBOs and support in diversifying the livelihood options of the poor. All these have helped in addressing poverty at various levels. This has been made possible because of the best practices of Kudumbashree that were tailored specific to the context of each Partner State and the mentors from Kerala that guided the various projects.

At this juncture, it also seems important to share, learn and understand the experiences from the best practices of Partner States, both impact and challenges which will in turn help Kudumbashree to grow further and become more vibrant. For the same, a capacity building programme, named Jalakam was devised by the Kudumbashree NRO in which the selected ex- CDS chairpersons will get an opportunity to travel to the partner states of Kudumbashree NRO to learn and understand the NRO activities.

The selected CDS chairpersons across the fourteen districts of Kerala are divided into 5 batches. The first batch of 61 participants from Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Palakkad districts were briefed about the programme from 31st January to 1st February and they were given opportunity to talk with the mentor resource persons who had worked in Rajasthan for PRI-CBO Convergence project. An exhibition was also arranged for the workshop to facilitate them learn about the culture, arts, livelihood pattern, traditions and society of Rajasthan and the project activities of Kudumbashree NRO.

The exposure visit for Batch 1 was conducted at Sangod block, Kota district of Rajasthan from 3rd to 6th February. The batch was divided into four and were given mentor resource persons and Mentor Core Group members to lead the visit. The visit was facilitated in such a way that the entire team got an opportunity to familiarise the culture, life and standard of living of the villages in Sangod. Activities were facilitated during the visit to build rapport with the SHG members and to understand about the changes in their lives after being members of the SHGs. Interactions were facilitated with the SHG federations and various institutions.

A debriefing workshop was also arranged for the Batch 1 Jalakam participants from 9th to 10th February. The participants presented their observations and experiences from the Rajasthan learning visit. Sessions were facilitated for them to plan their further roles in Kudumbashree and initiatives they want to implement in their Panchayats. The Batch 1 Jalakam programme will be concluded with the district level workshop which will be facilitated by the respective district missions.
