Guruvayur (also written as Guruvayoor or Gurupavanapuri) is a municipal temple town at Thrissur District of Kerala State in India. It lies 25 km to the north west of Thrissur City. The Guruvayur Temple is a famous Sri Krishna temple and is one of the most important places of worship for Hindus, the fourth position in India in terms of the number of devotees visiting per day.

Guruvayoor Township was formed on 26 January 1962 with four electoral wards with an area of 6.49 km2. Later the wards were increased to 10 and in 1994 to 20 when the township was upgraded to Municipality status with an area of 29.66 km2. In 2010, the electoral wards were increased to 43. Guruvayoor is a Grade-1 Municipality. As of the Indian census of 2011, Guruvayur had a population of 70012. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Guruvayur has an average literacy rate of 94.44%.

It has been unique identity in the national movement of freedom. Mahatma Gandhi visited the city after Guruvayur Satyagraha. The temple Entry Satyagraha and Hindu Cultural Conference brought Guruvayoor to the attention of all India. Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Leaders like Rajendra Prasad and Indira Gandhi visited this place. They entered Satyagraha in Guruvayoor under the leadership of K Kelappaji in 1932 to enter the temple. Subramanya Thirumumbu, A. K. G and others.

The Punnathur Fort is famous for the elephant management of the Guruvayur Temple. Chavakad Beach, Chettuva port, St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Palayur is one of the oldest churches in India such as places near Guruvayur tourism travel destinations.

          As per census India, population of Guruvayoor in 2011 is 70012; of which male and females are 32450 and 37562 respectively.
