Kannur has an average literacy rate of 96.23%, higher than the national average of 74.04%. Male literacy is 98% and female literacy is 94%. In Kannur, 12% of the population is under six years of age. Muslims form the majority of the population with 32026 members forming 56.3% of the population. There are 21557 Hindus forming 37.9% of the population.
