Irinjalakuda is a Municipal town in Thrissur district, Kerala, India. Irinjalakuda is the headquarters of Mukundapuram Taluk. The Municipality was formed on February 8, 1936 with an area of 11.24 square kilometres. K.I. Varunny was the first municipal chairman and the municipality was divided into 22 electoral wards. Now, the Municipality has 41 wards. Irinjalakuda is the headquarters of the Mukundapuram Taluk and is a Grade-I Municipality.

Demographic Details

As of 2011 India census, Irinjalakuda had a population of 62532. Males constitute 48% of the population and females 52%, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Housing as per Census data 2011

As per 2011 census, the total number of households in Irinjalakuda Municipality 15933 and total population for the city is 62532.  In census reports the data was divides in Irinjalakuda Municipality & Porathissery Panchayath. Porathissery Grama Panchayath was added to ULB later. As per Census reports 2011, 70.14% of the total household have “Own House”; 5.73% live in “Rented House” and 24.11% comes under the category “Any Other”. Regarding the housing condition,44.2% of total population living in Good Housing condition, 46.6% living in Livable conditions and 9.2 % living in dilapidated housing conditions.

Housing as per SECC Data 2011

As per the reports, there is some variation in basic demography details which has observed on SECC 2011 and Census 2011. The total population in census reports is 65532 whereas it is 47827 in SECC data. Total households in census are 15933 whereas it is 12211 in SECC 2011.

Regarding the ownership of houses, there are 11176 families who have own house, 914 families living in rental houses, 60 families living as shared household, 4 families living on the premises with employer and 17 families living in the house provided by the employer on the basis of SECC 2011. 38 families reported their living status as ‘others’.

Housing profile of the ULB

Providing safe shelter and housing to deserving families and to the most vulnerable group are one among the major responsibilities of local body administration. Government of India and Government of Kerala have been implementing projects and programmes to address the challenges faced in housing and habitat development in rural as well as in urban areas. Irinjalakuda Municipality has been participating in all the schemes by implementing various housing, slum re-development and infrastructure development programme since 2003.

Housing schemes implemented in ULB under different schemes

Summary of the housing schemes/programmes including slum re-development projects implemented by Irinjalakuda Municipality are mentioned below.

  1. SC Projects

Schedule Caste is one among the most vulnerable groups in the society, because of many socio-economic and political reasons. Acknowledging this, Irinjalakuda Municipality had constructed 30 houses during the period 2014 to 2016 with a total cost of Rs. 7700000/-

  1. VAMBAY

71 new houses were constructed VAMBAY project and ULB spent an amount of Rs. 2840000/-

  1. IHSDP

97 new houses were constructed and 313 houses renovated under IHSDP project and ULB spent an amount of Rs. 13662264/-

  1. Plan Fund

60 new houses were constructed in the period 2011-16 under ULB plan fund and ULB spent an amount of Rs. 11375000/-

  1. PMAY

184 houses hot approval in PMAY project phase 01, 219 houses approved in phase 02, 27 houses approved in phase 03 and  120 houses approved in phase 04 and Implementation is in progress. 385 houses started construction and 67 houses completed.
