Manjeri is the one of the keralas biggest Municipality . Manjeri Municipality is a Local Self Government Institution with a jurisdiction of 3 villages, Manjeri, Payyanad and Narukara. It is the trade hub of Malappuram district and also, its industrial capital . Most of the government institutions and many offices such as district court, district hospital, district medical office are located at Manjeri.Ali Musliyar Erikunnan who fought against the British rule was a native of Nellikkuth near Manjeri. The eastern side of Manjeri town is a hilly area. FM Station of All India Radio "College Kunnu", is a hill, where the N.S.S College is also situated. Towards the south lie Vettecode andPullancheri. Prominent schools such as Chinmaya Vidyalaya ,Noble Public School are located at Vettecode. The famous Kunnath Temple is on the way to Vettecode. Pullancheri is a beautiful place with hills, lush scenery, dam and Kadalundy River. This river starts from the eastern border of Malappuram district called Karuvarakkundu and flows into the Arabian sea. Manjeri Municipality came into existence on April 1 of 1978. MPM Ishaque kurikkal was the first chairman. In fact, he holds the record as the youngest person to be elected as a Municipal chairman in India. Manjeri is located 30 miles away from Kozhikode and is the headquarters of Ernad taluk and is a Grade-I Municipality. Manjeri was a stronghold of the rebels during the Malabar rebellion of 1921 and hosted the Malabar District Political conference in 1920. The leaders of the movement Erikunnan Ali Musaliar and Variamkunnath Kunjahammed Haji belonged to Nellikkunnam in Manjeri.

Demographic Details

Manjeri municipality has a population of 97102 (2011 census) with growth rate of 18.09 percent during 2001-2011. Population density of the city is 1830 persons per km. The male population is 47171 whereas femle population is 49931. Manjeri municipality has 50 wards, ward number 3 is the most populous ward with a population of 2667 and ward njumber 31 is the least populous ward with population of 1060.

Different housing schemes implemented in the ULB under different schemes

  1. VAMBAY

Vambay is the program introduced by central government during 2002-03 which aims to give financial aid to urban poor to construct home. As per the scheme the central Govt. offers up to 40000 for the houses of 30m2. Out of 459 houses started construction, 429 completed. Manjeri municipality considers it is a successful venture.

  1. EMS Housing Scheme

Under the scheme municipality gave financial assistance of 75000/- (from 11/2011 onwards it was raised to 2 lakhs) for the houses with a range of 25-60m2. In EMS housing survey at the first stage there are 900 beneficiaries. When ration card became an essential criterion, the number beneficiaries reduced to 205. Out of 205 beneficiaries, 106persons started constructionand 98 completed. Municipality bought land for landless and 3cents each is given to 32 beneficiaries.Even now the scheme is ongoing in ULB.

  1. SC HousingScheme(2012-13, 13-14)

Under this scheme Municipality gave financial assistance of 2 lakhs for schedules caste womento construct 60m2 houses. In 2012-13 financial year 48 houses allotted while in 2013-14, 41 houses assigned in this scheme.

 

 

  1. Shihab Thangal Housing Scheme

With a view of housing for all, Municipality introduced a housing scheme called Shihab Thangal Housing Scheme during the year 2014-15. In this own scheme of municipality financial assistance of 2lakhs is given toaround 600 houseless families. For the scheme municipality took loan of Rs. 10 Crores from Manjeri Co-operative Bank and distributed the amount to beneficiaries’in four instalments as per stage certificate. Out of 571beneficiaries,442 beneficiaries completed construction.
