Koyilandi found a place in the History with the discovery of sea route to India by the Protuguese traveller Vasco da Gama who landed at kappad beach (8 Km from town) in 1498.But the recent research by Prof. MNS Narayanan says that Gama landed in Koyilandi.Tha discovery of sea route gave a significant advantage to international trade from India especialy to the Europe.

National Highway 66 (formerly NH 17) between Kozhikode and Mangalore passes through the municipality for a distance of 5 Km. As most all the major developments are concentrated on both Sides of the NH.Koyilandy railway station. Mangalore- Shornur railway line passes through this town. The nearest airport is Calicut international airport, Karipur, is approximately 50 Km from the town. There are number of natural harbours, which are highly helpful in fishing and related activities. There is a fishing harbor Koyilandy in Ward 38 – Thazhandai .The Fishing industry has been contributing to economic growth of Kerala as it generates considerable Revenue, especially foreign exchange. Koyilandy is the one of the taluk of Kozhikode district. The population of Koyilandy as per 2011 census is 71,729 which form about 2.33% of Kozhikode.

the Koyilandy Density more in the coastal wards and wards along the sides of major roads. Among the wards, highest density is seen in Ward 34(Chalilparambu – 15040 persons per sqkm) and lowest density is in ward 23 (Moozhikalmeethal -778 persons per sqkm).

Housing Profile

Residential areas are located over almost all parts of the town. About 57% of the total developed area of the town is thickly populated compared to the eastern part. Non residential uses are comparatively meager in this part. As per the survey done in 2012 there are about 10950 houses in the municipality.

According to the survey done by municipality there are 124 slum clusters in Koyilandi.

Non residential uses are comparatively meager in this part. As per the survey done in 2012 there are about 10950 houses in the municipality.

No slums are identified as per PMAY criteria. But 13 slum clusters are identified in the IHSDP and implemented housing and infrastructure projects to solve the housing issues. Costal area and wetland issues are the major problem of implementiing the programme.
