Malappuram Town is situated in Ernad taluk.   Malappuram Municippality has a very rich heritage. Traces of existenve of Jain and Buddha fllowers around 2000 years before , had explored from this area . The ancient Jain caves exist in many places even today.The modern history starts from 13th Century from the time of Samoothiri Period. The other important places in this Taluk are Manjeri,Nilambur, Kondotty and Kottakkal,Tirur,  Perinthalmanna and Ponnani and other Taluks in the District.  Manjeri is the Headquarters of Ernad Taluk while towns of Tirur, Perinthalmanna and Ponnani are Taluk headquarters for the respective Taluks.  Malappuram Town is bounded by Pookottur panchayath on the North,Anakkayam Panchayath on The East, Koottilangadi and Kuruva well connected by road to the neighbouring important town and cities.  It is situated 51 km South East of Calicut City and about 89 Km North west of palaghat City and in fact, the Calicut-palaghat Road passess through this town.  The nearest important rail head is tirur on the Cochin-Manglore broad gauge line wich is 28/ Km from Malappuram.  There is also a railway station at Angadippuram on the Shornur Nilambur broad guage feeder line, 12 Km from Malappuram.

Housing Profile

As per, the Census report 2001, there are 10353 families in Malappuram Municipality. As per Socio Economic Caste Census report 2010, there are 12665 houses (As per the Property Tax Assessment Register there are 15620 Residentail Houses). The average are of the houses are 75-150M2:

The Master plan of 2010 show that 1.75% houses (nearly 221 houses) are of poor standard (thatched roof). When comparing the number of families and number of houses   it shows a difference of 2728, that is if we construct 2728 houses only then it will be tallied. Above all, all the families are very much interested in their own houses.                   

Important housing interventions

In order to cater the need of housing Malappuram municipality has introduced several programs. They are:-

1 VAMBAY

Vambay is the program introduced by the central Govt. during 2002 -03. The aim of the program was to give financial aid to the urban poor.  As per the scheme the central Govt. offers up to Rs.40, 000/- for the houses with 30 M2. Malappuram municipality has constructed 427 houses under the scheme, and considers it as a successful venture. The role of municipality is to create awareness among the people about housing.

2 Integrated Housing and Slum Development Project (IHSDP)

For the comprehensive development of urban slums, the central Govt. introduced IHSDP during the 2005-2012. In first phase (2007) Rs. 10.45crores and during the second phase (2009) 7.54 crores spent by central Govt. During the Ist phase 37 slums, IInd phase 19 slums were selected by the municipality.

Apart from  the financial Assistance  to the individual beneficiaries, Malappuram municipality has constructed  184 flats at  the  salubrious hill   at Pambad, situated at ward No. 31 (old ward No. 26) , without even changing the landscape. The Municipality has constructed road, provided the facility for water and electricity to people at Pambad with a nominal beneficiary share of Rs. 30, 000/-

When comparing to the other housing schemes, the municipality considered it as the prominent project ever undertaken by the municipality in any locality. Through the scheme municipality resolved the housing problem.

3 Own schemes by the municipality-House repair Schemes

Through the Peoples Campaign/Decentralized Program the Municipality is not in position to undertake housing schemes. Hence it provided financial assistance for house repair for 866 houses.

4 EMS housing scheme

            Under the scheme the municipality gave financial assistance of Rs. 75,000/- (from 11/2011 onwards it was raised to Rs.  2 lakh) for the houses with a range of 25-60 M2.In this scheme, the Municipality selected 71 beneficiaries (46 Houseless General Category+25 SCLandless-HouseLess)

5 Shihab Thangal Housing Scheme

With a view of housing for all, Malappuram Municipality introduced a housing scheme exclusively with its own fund, viz, Shihab Thangal Housing Scheme during the year 2014-15.Through the scheme, Municipality gave financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh for BPL families for house construction. The municipality took a loan of Rs. 2.7 crores from KURDFC and distributed the amount to the beneficiaries by four installments.
