City Profile

Payyanur is a city in the Northern part of Kannur District in the State of Kerala. It is one of the largest municipality in this area. This Municipality consisits of three administrative villages Vellur, Korom, and Payyanur. Total 44 wards are there in payyannur and have total of 596 NHGS with 10771 NHG members. The city is situated on the banks of Perumba River.

The place derives its name from the renowned Sri. Subrahmanya Swami Temple located here. Payyanur is an appellation of Lord Subrahmanya and ‘ooru’ means ‘the place’. Thus Payyanur means the land of Subrahmanya.

Payyanur is a densely populated town in Kannur district and is located in the northern end of Kannur district. The National Highway 17 passing through the Payyanur Municipal town and connects it with other parts of the state. Demographic Details

The city is home to about 72 thousand people, among them about 33 thousand (46%) are male and about 39 thousand (54%) are female. 94% of the whole population are from general caste, 6% are from schedule caste and 0% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Payyannur municipality is 10%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 17 thousand households in the city and an average 4 persons live in every family.

Religion wise distribution of population

Hindus contribute 80% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the city followed by Muslims which contribute 18% of the total population and Christians are the third largest religious community here with 2% population.. Female Sex ratio per 1000 male in Hindus are 1140 in Muslims are 1266 and in Christians are 1071.

Growth of population

Population of the city has increased by 4.9% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 69 thousand. Female population growth rate of the city is 7.4% which is 5.2% higher than male population growth rate of 2.2%. General caste population has increased by 4.8%; Schedule caste population has increased by 3.6%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 800% and child population has decreased by -1.1% in the city since last census.

Sex Ratio - Females per 1000 Male

As of 2011 census there are 1159 females per 1000 male in the city. Sex ratio in general caste is 1163, in schedule caste is 1092 and in schedule tribe is 913. There are 951 girls under 6 years of age per 1000 boys of the same age in the city. Overall sex ratio in the city has increased by 57 females per 1000 male during the years from 2001 to 2011. Child sex ratio here has decreased by 25 girls per 1000 boys during the same time.

Literacy

Total about 61 thousand people in the city are literate, among them about 29 thousand are male and about 32 thousand are female. Literacy rate (children under 6 are excluded) of Payyannur is 94%. 97% of male and 92% of female population are literate here. Overall literacy rate in the city has increased by 2%. Male literacy has gone down by 0% and female literacy rate has gone up by 4%.

Workers profile

Payyannur has 35% (about 25 thousand) population engaged in either main or marginal works. 52% male and 21% female population are working population. 49% of total male population are main (full time) workers and 4% are marginal (part time) workers. For women 15% of total female population are main and 5% are marginal workers.

Out of 16844 households 93.43% have owned houses. Sincere efforts have been made to address the issue through various programmes like IHSDP project, VAMBAY, ASHRAYA, EMS housing, Janakeeyasootranam project etc, but still there is demand for housing in the municipal area.
