The women of Kannur District had started a Coir Defibering unit which had been launched at Pariyaram of Kannur district of Kerala. At the same time, yet another coir defibering unit was launched at Thrissur as well. Launched as per the special directions of Dr. T.M Thomas Issac, Minister of Finance, Government of Kerala, more horizons of job opportunity were opened to the women. The initiative had not only helped to find a new livelihood for the women but also it is strengthening the coir industry sector in the state. Yet another coir defibering had been started at Thrissur district of Kerala along with the one started at Pariyaram. The programme waswould soon be extended to more districts in the state gradually. As per the 2011 Census Data, 12.8% of people are above 60 years of age. By 2030, the percentage of the elderly people would cross 20%. That means, one fifth of the population of Kerala would constitute elderly people. The vanished joint family setup, drift towards modern nuclear families, urbanisation, and mass migration of youngsters for jobs and education have left many elders lonely and isolated.Elder people are highly vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation and it could even affect them very adversely during their old age and it is on identifying the same and it was for addressing the issue of social isolation, Kudumbashree put forward the idea of Elderly NHGs. Pakalveedu is yet another concept of the Government of Kerala which stands for the welfare of the lonely elder people, where they can spend their lonely time with other elderly people. The respective Local Self Government Institutions would be in charge of the Pakalveed in every Panchayath. The district mission of Thrissur thought of converging both these concepts and tried to make maximum out of it. Let us see how these concepts were merged together for the welfare of the elderly people in the district of Thrissur.
