The Baby food industry is on a boom in Kerala with changing times. The Food Supplement needs are currently being met by big corporates. This is mainly due to the fact that these players are huge corporates who have an unlimited control over the market. They enjoy a wide reputation and have immense brand pull due to their heavy publicity stunts. Moreover they can easily manipulate the prices of the markets where local players try to come up and thus the local players are forced to step back from their business due to heavy loss.

There is a better alternative for this problem as we can start the business through a different approach, in liaison with the Balwadi’s and Anganwadi’s and further build up a strong network of infrastructure to support bulk production. In this scheme, we will be manufacturing the baby food supplement and providing it directly to the anganwadi’s and balwadi’s at nearby locations giving us an assured and steady market. In this way we can initially step into the business profitably and set-up a huge infrastructural base.

We can further use this set up to venture into the business in bulk manner, as by then we will have a good infrastructure, and a huge market knowledge as well as market control. This way it will be easy for the Kudumbashree network to cope up with the market threats and adverse competition. This will also provide our Kudumbashree activity group members with a good source of income.

The project idea started when a group from Bedadukka panchayat started this venture about a year and a half ago. The product was developed by Central Plantation Crops Research Institute CPCRI, Kasargode. The group obtained training and product Knowledge from them, and has been successfully running ever since. They have even completely paid off their loan repayment within this short period and are seriously thinking about asset accumulation, buying a mill etc. This is a success model, which should be replicated elsewhere in the state.
